Learning Contract

Needs assessment: I am currently employed by my church to coordinate and train volunteers to run the video projector and PowerPoint in the worship services.  When I cannot find or schedule appropriate volunteers, I need to perform the work myself, which inhibits my ability to do other projects.  I need reliable people to perform this service, and those people need to be trained so they are comfortable functioning independently.

Learning Objective: I would like to learn at least three strategies for training a volunteer technical team.

Learning Activities:

  1. Have a least three of my current volunteers fill out a questionnaire designed to point out the strengths and weaknesses of the present recruiting and training program.
  2. Attend the videoconference “Expanding the Vision / Technology in Worship” in hopes it addresses personnel issues related to technology in church environments
  3. Interview Steve Racz, a colleague who coordinates and trains audio volunteers, to see what strategies he finds effective in our organization.
  4. Research what other non-profit institutions (churches in particular) have written about recruiting, training and developing volunteer technical crews.

Time Line:

  1. Attend the videoconference on March 7th.
  2. Write the questionnaire by March 15th.
  3. Have current volunteers fill out and return questionnaires by March 29th.
  4. Interview Steve by April 5th.
  5. Gather research by April 12th.
  6. Turn in summary paper by April 30th.

Evaluation Criteria:

I believe the best form of evaluation for this project would be a written report on my findings and a preliminary plan to implement the strategies I found to be most effective.  The plan will describe the things I anticipate doing to train my volunteers.  The report will summarize the data I gather, which should justify why the plan has been developed in its particular form, and will include a bibliography of any appropriate resources I discover.
